The Virus Diaries is a short film produced over twelve months.

We are going behind the scenes to talk with director Emily Holt and her team about their experience of making the film.

Interview with Emily Holt

Q) Emily Holt, what motivated you to create the Virus Diaries?

''It’s a way to record what I have been doing whilst shielding over the past year.''

Q) Can you tell me more about the actual process of making the film?

''I skype called my wellbeing assistant twice a week to give regular direction and feedback to cuts of the film. I wanted to get as much feedback from those around me as possible, so I sent the film to my family and management at Compass Homecare who deliver my care services. I also interviewed my mum and sister.

The homecare Personal Assistants from Compass Homecare have been invaluable in the making of this film. They have set up the calls and given invaluable input and perspectives during weekly workshops with my wellbeing assistant.''

Q) What is the role of a Wellbeing Assistant?

''The NHS funds my care which includes a small component for mental health and wellbeing. I have a wellbeing assistant who helps me to create art, this is the form of mental and wellbeing support which I think works best for me. I am an artist who wants to continue practising what I love. I have had a few wellbeing personal assistants over the years.''

Q) Emily, what have you enjoyed the most about collaborating with others to make the Virus Diaries?

''I have enjoyed hearing feedback from my family and care team. This collaborative process has pushed me creatively.''

Q) What are your aims for this film?

''To raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis and the everyday life of someone shielding from COVID-19.''
